The Agency Chronicles
The Agency Chronicles
Have you ever walked into a company's office and thought, "Wow, these people must be successful?" Now flip that around. Have you ever visited a company that claims to be innovative and industry-leading, only to find stained carpet, harsh fluorescent lights, and a conference room that looks like it survived a small disaster? It's a little like showing up to a black-tie gala wearing flip-flops.
You can tell people you're sophisticated all day long. Eventually, the room gets a vote. Most companies think branding ends with a logo and a website. The smartest companies know it doesn't stop at the front door.
Sometimes, branding is the front door.
At WollnerStudios, we call this Total Branding. Think of it as branding on steroids.
Total Branding takes the strategy, personality, and visual identity of a company and extends it into the entire physical environment. Not just the logo. Not just the website. Not just the brochure that everyone in the sales department still forgets to attach.
We are talking about the building itself.
The exterior. The lobby. The conference rooms. The offices. The manufacturing areas. The clean rooms. The signage. The colors. The lighting. The furniture. The flooring. The kitchen. The restrooms. The door handles. Yes, even the door handles. Because every detail either supports the brand or quietly works against it.
Most companies spend real money developing their brand identity, then forget that their physical environment is one of the most important brand touchpoints they have. A customer visits. An investor walks in. A potential employee arrives for an interview. A partner tours the facility.
Before the first meeting begins, they are already making judgments. Does this company feel buttoned up? Does it feel innovative? Does it feel successful? Does it feel like a place where serious work happens? Or does it feel like someone ordered a logo, slapped it on the wall, and called it a day?
Your office is not neutral. Your building is not silent. It is either building confidence or creating doubt.
One of the best examples of Total Branding is the work we did for Honeybee Robotics, now a Blue Origin company. This was not a simple logo refresh. It was not a “pick a paint color and hang a sign” project.
It was a full-scale brand environment project involving three buildings: two in California and one in Colorado. The first building was one floor. The second building had two floors. Each space had to support a highly technical aerospace and robotics company while also presenting a polished, professional, high-tech image to employees, clients, partners, and visitors.
The work started with planning. We helped determine where key areas should go, how large they needed to be, and how the space should function. Conference rooms, offices, clean rooms, manufacturing areas, cubicle zones, lobbies, and common areas all had to be considered carefully.
This was not decoration. This was strategy, operations, branding, architecture, and design working together.
Once the overall plan was established, the details began.
And there were a lot of details.
In collaboration with a local architectural firm for construction documentation, and a construction company selected with care, we helped document every element of the project. The result was hundreds of pages of specifications covering nearly everything you can imagine. Wall colors. Flooring. Lighting. Tables. Chairs. Restroom stalls. Faucets. Outlets. Signage. Kitchen fixtures. Conference room layouts. Lobby details. Furniture systems. Materials. Finishes. The goal was not to spend money everywhere. That is easy. The goal was to know where to spend and where not to spend. That is where experience matters.
For Honeybee Robotics, the environment had to feel robotics, aerospace, and high tech. It also had to be functional, durable, efficient, and responsible to the budget. A beautiful office that does not work is just an expensive mistake with nice lighting.
As part of the project, WollnerStudios also redesigned the Honeybee Robotics logo and developed a new visual identity manual.
That was important because the brand was not standing still. Honeybee was growing, acquiring companies, expanding its footprint, and presenting itself to increasingly important audiences. The visual identity had to work on a website, in presentations, on signage, inside the building, outside the building, and across different locations. That is the point of Total Branding.
Everything connects. The logo, the lobby, the conference room, the manufacturing space, the exterior signage, and the feeling people get when they walk through the door should all tell the same story.
Kris Zacny, PhD, Vice President of Exploration Technologies at Honeybee Robotics, described the experience this way:
“I had a pleasure of working with Michael and his team at WollnerStudios during the design, construction, and commissioning of our new location in Altadena, CA. Michael and his team has done superb job trying to meet our requirements while keeping the cost within our allocated budget. They understand where we should and should not spend the money, while trying to keep the overall theme ‘robotics/aerospace/high tech’ intact. Our new facilities look amazing and yet are very functional, which is critical to winning new contracts and stay under budget. Michael has also redesigned our logo and developed new branding—these were critical as we have been growing and acquiring new companies. WollnerStudios bears my highest recommendations.”
That quote captures what Total Branding is really about.
It is not about making things pretty. Pretty is nice. Pretty has its place. But pretty alone does not win contracts, impress investors, attract talent, or support growth. Function matters. Budget matters. Strategy matters. The brand experience matters.
Why Total Branding Creates an Advantage
A well-designed brand environment can change how people feel about a company. It can make a business look more established. More capable. More innovative. More trustworthy. More desirable to work for. More prepared to handle large contracts or high-stakes partnerships.
That matters in aerospace. It matters in technology. It matters in manufacturing. It matters in hospitality, professional services, healthcare, finance, and almost every industry where credibility influences decisions. People may not remember the exact flooring material in your lobby. They may not remember the name of the chair in your conference room.
But they remember how the space made them feel. They remember whether it gave them confidence.
Branding Should Not Stop at the Website
For many companies, the website gets all the attention. That makes sense. It is often the first place people go. But what happens when the website says one thing and the real-world experience says another? That is where trust can start to crack.
Total Branding closes that gap.
It takes the promise of the brand and brings it into the physical world. It turns strategy into space. It turns positioning into an experience. It turns a company’s identity into something people can see, touch, walk through, and remember.
When done well, it feels effortless. Of course, behind the scenes, it is anything but effortless.
The Big Idea
Total Branding is not for every project. It takes time, planning, coordination, and a willingness to think beyond the usual definition of branding. But for companies that are growing, relocating, expanding, acquiring, repositioning, or preparing to compete at a higher level, it can be transformative. Because your brand is not just your logo. It is not just your website. It is not just your tagline, your color palette, or your sales presentation. Your brand is the total experience people have with your company. And sometimes, that experience begins the moment they pull into the parking lot.
